We left Christchurch in LOTS of rain, time to move on. Took us 30 minutes to get out of town, because we had to backtrack due to flooding. Finally got on the open road and headed south and west, wending our way toward Queenstown. The route goes across the high mountain valleys in the center of the country, in the Southern Alps.
We went through beautiful country on our way. It's Fall here, and the colors are splendid. The whole country looks like a park, like something planned by a particularly talented garden landscaper. Tall poplar-like trees, undulating rivers, rolling cultivated hills, and in the background everywhere, absolutely stunning mountains.
Went through Fairley and Geraldine, where one of the women in the Information Centre told us we really should go to Lake Tikapo. We were really glad we did. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the lake was just beautiful.. The campervan park is at the southern end, with a fabulous view of the lake and the Two Thumbs mountain range. We parked and made dinner in Ralph, our name for our home-away-from-home.
We've found we like to stop before 5:30. It gets dark pretty quickly down here, since they're going into winter pretty soon.
It was chilly there, but well worth the stop.
